Abstract
For a nation that upholds the values of
civilization, the Indonesian people cannot be separated from the issues of education. From the first
it has been obviously placed in the integral position of the existence of
Indonesian. English is an important part of education thoroughly, because by
the teaching of English the children are trained to think critically, creatively,
carefully and act logically. Thus it is extremely important that how the
students can absorb English material as much as possible, so that students can
use it in everyday life. Integrative means unify several aspects into one
process. Integrative can be divided into the same studies and between different
studies. The same study means some aspects are integrated in a single field of
study. For example, listening is integrated with speaking and writing. Writing
is integrated with speaking and reading. The linguistic material is integrated
with language skill. While between the different studies are the integration
material from several fields of studies. This research was conducted at SMAN 1
Baureno Bojonegoro, where the researcher is as an English teacher. Research
object is at grade XII class XII-IPS 1 in first semester of academic year
2013/2014. English subjects is on the theme of "Recount Text". This
research was carried out for 2 months that lasts from November to December of
2013. From these students are motivated in teaching and learning activities. In
this study, students’ achievement has increased after the holding of the
learning process, students’ achievement on the first cycle is 63.6 (low), the
second cycle was 72.3, and the third cycle was 86.3 (good), from the
observation the authors conclude that the use of integrative methods can be
used to improve learning achievement, especially in the subjects of English at
SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro academic year 2013/2014.

English as a
language is not easy to learn, especially for students of SMAN Baureno Bojonegoro, since English as new subjects, it is very complex for them. When they
learn the English language means students learn a new language which has some
differences in grammar with
their own language.
Many linguists say that every language has certain differences with the other languages. For examplee, English and Indonesian language has some differences when they are compareded. The differences are not found in the Indonesian language. For example, in English has some differences, such as: 1. Structure of language, 2. Tenses, 3. Spelling and pronunciation of words
All the differences are
not found in the Indonesian language and those will make the students difficult to study.
The achievement of teaching
aim is measured in the ability of the students’ evaluation results those are expressed in students’ test result. For a nation that
upholds the values of civilization, the Indonesian people cannot be separated in the issue of education; it has been obviously placed in the integral position of Indonesian existences. Thus from the beginning the education problem has been clearly
placed in the integral position
of Indonesian existences. In this case the education development for the intellectual
life of the nation is part of a national goal of Indonesian nation.
In this case, the effort of Indonesian
nation in realizing national
development focused on education, the role of education in human life has significant importance role, since education to develop
human personality in accordance with the values in the society. Reciprocation
of a nation or state is largely determined by whether or not an advanced
education.
We need to know, that the success of the national education is to create
harmony and balance of the nation's outlook on life in order to fill the
independence of Indonesia. National development is to build a whole
person, which includes aspects of building material and the spiritual, or the
totality of the human being.
So from the facts above, the writer made a
study of this class action research
entitled " Application of Integrative Methods For Improving Language Skill and Abilities To Response Text Content Of Story Orally at
Grade XII Class XII-IPS 1 SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro Academic Year 2013/2014”
The aims and features of the Integrative
Methods Program
Understanding
Integrative Methods, Integrative
means unify several aspects into one process. Integrative divided into the same studies and between differen tstudies. The same studies
means some aspects are integrated in a single field of study. For example,
listening is integrated with speaking and writing. Writing is integrated with
speaking and reading. Linguistic material integrated with language skills.
While the language of fields of study is the integration of several fields of
study. For example, the English language with other subject areas.
In English learning, integrative studies the same studies more widely used. When teaching the sentence, the
teacher does not directly hand to the students but the material begins with reading or the
other. Displacement is regulated thin. In fact, teachers are good at
integrating the delivery of material can cause the student does not feel the
movement of the material.
Integrative is expected by the English curriculum for integrating applied
in accordance with the basic competencies that students need to be owned. The
material is not separated. Teaching materials is attractively packaged unity.
Understanding
the learning achievement, Achievement
is the result after going through a process owned by Poerwadarmintha Dictionary
achievement is "achievement is a result that has been achieved" (WJS
Poerwadarminta, 1984, P. 768) "while according Soemarwan states that:
Achievement is the result of learning: while the definition of learning
outcomes is the level of mastery achieved by students in the learning program
students with educational goals that have been strengthened. Learning outcomes
in the context of the study area includes cognitive, affective and speed of
learning a student (Soenarwan, 1981, P. 79). Guided from the description above
then it can be taken a notion that the extent of achievement of learning that
has been achieved by the ability of students to understand and know set a master lessons given in school. And this
can be seen from the figures achieved in the form of value and also can be seen
from the test results of students' daily test.
Method
This research
was conducted at SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro, where researcher carried out the duties as an English teacher. Research Object is Grade XII class XII IPS 1 on the first semester of academic year
2013/2014. Then the English lesson on the theme of "Recount Text".
This research was carried out for 2 months i.e. from November
to December of 2013.
Method of Collecting Data, Method of data collection in this research plays an important role, because the validity of
the data obtained in order to achieve the goals set. As for obtaining the
desired data in the context of this study used several methods: 1. Method of evaluation. The evaluation is done to measure
understanding and improving student learning outcomes. 2. Method Documentation.
Documentation is derived from the word document means the written stuff
(Suharsini Arikunto, 1983, P. 114). Method of documentation is a way to collect
data and record by quoting the data contained in the document - an important
document that is suitable
with the problems to be studied. Documentation used in this study to collect
data on the number and names of the students.
Method of Data
Analysis
Analysis techniques is a step in the continuation
of data collection. The meaning of the data analysis techniques are used to process
the way analyzing research data. Here the authors use data reduction and
exposure data. The results during the conduct of research is a form of learning
achievement of students of class XII IPS 1 SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro on first semester of
academic year 2013/2014.
The Participants.
A
study, of course, dealing with a number of people, events, objects or symptoms
occur. All objects of this research are often called the population. Moh. Ali
argues that: "The whole object of research in the form of humans, objects,
and materials called population" (Moh. Ali, 1987, P. 54).
According to the above,
this research will use a population those are students in class XII
IPS 1 SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro
which has the following characteristics: 1. Name listed in main book 2. Still active in teaching and
learning process at the school in the academic year 2013/2014 3. Live with their own parents during the
study 4. Still be financed by
their parents themselves.
Based on these
criteria, the Grade XII IPS 1 SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro included 220 students. With the populations
sampled were students in class XII IPS 1 consisted of 30 students.
Reason: "For a
population of less than 100 persons / unit, for example, a sample should be
taken 10-15% or 20-25%" (Suharsimi Aritkunto, 1987). From the opinion of
the researchers used a sample of 30 students or part of the population.
Research Instruments
To obtain research data used instruments as follows:
1. Sheet of
notes, to record the activities associated with the behavior of the students
during the learning process.
2. Sheet of
classroom observations are used by observers during the learning process.
3. Sheet of students’ respons to know how far
students’ achievement got after being applied the integrative method.
4. Sheet
of final test to determine students' absorption of the material
presented.
5. Sheet of
questions.
How
Integrative method was conducted
Prior to carrying out the integrative method, the
students were briefed on importance of the research and advantages of using
integrative method to improve the students’ language skill and their abilities
to respons the text content of oral english story. The researcher used three
cycles for this study. Some activities were done in each cycle to the
implementation of integrative method. These included the teacher telling the
story to the students, the teacher implemented the integrative method in
teaching students by telling story tasks to improve the students’ language
skill and their ability to respons oral english story by giving them many oral
tasks in and out of class. The text which consist of various topics were chosen
by the students based on the students’ own text level, in doing the task the
teacher gave the book report that explains about title of the text, author,
type of the text the teacher read, the summary of the text, time to read,
comment for the text the teacher read, and they also had to fill out the
weekly reading and writing progress for
the task that must be submitted weekly. Teacher gave signature and gave it back
to the students. Then the students brought it home and gave the reportto the
parents, so that they knew their children language skill progress. The teacher
controlled the students’ ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
It was held weekly for one month or four times. At the end of the cycle, the
teacher distributed qustionnaires to all of the students to know to what extent
the integrative method task in teaching and learning had solved the problem.
Materials used
Materials the researcher used in implementing
integrative method was from all sources. It can be from the magazine, story
books, or they can download from the internet. We felt that they would be the
best persons to do so, as they know their own abilities and interest.
Result
Based on the reflection of cycle 1, cycle 2 and
cycle 3 the result was known that the
students’ skill and ability can be found by the researcher that the increase in the average value in each
cycle, from cycle 1 to cycle 2 Average: 8.7 and 2 to 3 cycles are: 74%, which
shows an increase positively.
This study was successful because the writer knows accordance with the
above data that role in the
implementation of this research is always increase from the first cycle to the
last cycle, the first cycle is: 63.6 (low), the second cycle are: 72.3, and the
third cycle is: 86.3 (good).
So the authors conclude that the application of integrative method can improve reading,
speaking and writing in class
XII IPS 1 on the subjects of English at SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro academic year 2013/2014.
Discussion
Based on the questionaire and observation, it can
be summarized that the problem ( low students’ language skill and inability to
respons text content of oral story) can be solved. In cycle 1 reflection
was held toward some inventions,
and so the teachers notes.
Teachers have been able to maintain and improve the management of learning by
using integrative method. Sheet of
data is used to obtain data on student learning outcomes when English is learned. Observation sheet is used to obtain data about the learning
process implemented. Students’ courage to ask questions during class discussions are still low . Students have not been able to
make a conclusion of each meeting or still expect a record of the teacher.
In cycle 2 the reflection was held toward some inventions
as well as teachrs’ notes. To collect the research data some instuments are
used;ie. From the result of cycle 1 the researcher increase
the management of the learning using integrative methods. Observation sheet is used to obtain data about the learning
process implemented. Students’courage
to ask questions during the teaching is good enough. In cycle 2 students have been able to
make a conclusion of each meeting
although only part of it.
In cycle 3 the researcher make some improvements toward some
weaknesses those are found from cycle 2. In the third cycle, the steps are the same as with previous cycles, but in cycle 3 researchers put more
emphasis on speaking and conversation skills in accordance with English
subjects. So some actions are done, such
as ddiscussingng the
difficult words used in the text.
Understanding the vocabularyy associated with recount text. Understanding the vocabulary associated with texts by
classifying, arranging, and completion.
Listening to the text in the
form of a monologue that uses grammar-related to recount text.
Answering a question about the content of the text. Doing the commands instructed
by the teacher. Then Teachers
give some assignments that had to be done by students.
At the end of the cycle reflections were held and something found, as well as the teachers notes. To collect the research data used
research instrument such as; that from
the results of cycle 2 increases with an integrative method. Students had the courage to ask questions
during the teaching and learning
process. In cycle 3 students have been able to make the conclusion of
each meeting.
Conclusion
The results of this study indicate that the
students have improved their language skill and their ability to respons text
content of oral story. That’s way the use of integrative method in solving the
problem of inability to respons the text content, like reading, speaking and
writing was success. Based on the
above results it can be concluded that:
Grade XII IPS 1
SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro can
be concluded with the increasing of understanding
possessed by students, teachers also can improve the results of students’ achievement espicially in English.
From these results above
the students were motivated
in learning activities. In this study, students’ achievement has increased after the holding of the learning
process, students’ achievement
on the first cycle is: 63.6 (low), the second cycle is: 72.3 and the third
cycle is: 86.3 (good), means that most of
the students in our school can and do benefit from integrative method the
teacher used. The majority of the students in this study develop positive
attitudes towards language skill and
abilities to respons the text content as the term progressed. However, whether
the integrative method helped to increase their proficiency in English is
something that cannot be determined conclusively by this study, given the fact
that this study was conducted over a period of two months,and the effects that
integrative method on the students’ language proficienecy can best be seen in
the long term.
In accordance with above results in understanding the rights and responsibilities of students’ achievement, especially for
students of grade XII IPS 1 SMAN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro, the writers suggest to support the success of the teaching and
learning process. For
Students, Researcher suggests that there must be an awareness of the students. So in the classroom and at
school will create a peaceful atmosphere, so the studnts will be eager to learn. For Teachers the
resercher suggest that English teacher should be able to solve the problems faced by students in
giving attention to them who
have low achievement. English
teacher should not
discriminate between smart and weak students.
For Headmaster, It is recommended that he should keep a good cooperation with the
teachers, especially to students, in order
that if the information given to them will be benefit for all as
much as possible as the
education is our responsibilities.
