Developing Esp Instructional Materials for Under Graduate Students of Islamic Education at STAI Alkhozini Sidoarjo

By Khurin In

The students of Islamic education learn English as their compulsory subject in their department since they need to broaden their knowledge about Islamic education not only by reading some references written in Indonesian language but also those written in English. The students are supposed to convey information from international education journal or some books written in English which are available in their library. In this case, they need to master specific English or ESP (English for Specific Purpose). Hutchinson and Waters (1987, p. 6) say that students who involve textbooks and journal written in English need to master this language. In other words, we have to improve the learners’ English based on the field of Islamic education.
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is part of more general movement of teaching language for specific purposes. ESP is an approach to language teaching which aims to meet the needs of particular learner (Hutchinson and Waters, 1987, p. 21). ESP is taught in some non-English department in some university such as: Islamic education, pharmacy, nursing, technology, engineering and others.
This research develops the instructional materials for graduate students of Islamic education at STAI Al Khozini Sidoarjo based on principles of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). Contextual Teaching and Learning is educational process helps students see meaning in the academic material they are studying by connecting academic subjects with the context of their daily lives. CTL is a system of instruction based on the philosophy that the students learn when they see meaning in schoolwork when they can connect new information with prior knowledge and their own experience. (Johnson, 2002, p. VII).
The scope of this research and development is in the areas of ESP for Islamic education students. The result of this research and development is a product of textbook. The instructional materials will impact on the teaching and learning activity in the Islamic education department with the hope to cope with the problem of students’ needs and their English learning in the classroom. This research is limited to develop instructional materials of English for undergraduate program of Islamic education (PAI) at STAI Al Khozini Sidoarjo, for the student in the second semester, and the instructional materials include writing and reading skills based on principles of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL).
