Improving the Students Reading Interest Use Reading Picture at Fifth Grade SDN Tanjungrejo IV Sukun – Malang

Introduction
This chapter presents background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study and definition of key terms.
1.1  Background
English becomes the most important language in the world. As International language, learning English become popular in some of country. As like in Indonesia, English become one of subject in that must be mastered. And many societies began realize about this fact.
The communication skill is reached through the development of the four major skills, namely : listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The last reason is the material of the reading text. According to 2004 Curriculum or Competency Based Curriculum which is then changed or perfected  into Content Standard based on which School level curriculum or KTSP is developed, there is a great chance in English lesson for Elementary School students. The material for  the English lesson in 1994 curriculum were designed according to thematic such as family, sport, culture, and so on. Meanwhile the materials for the English lesson in 2006 curriculum are designed based in genres or text types. The students should learn many kinds of text types consisting of recount, narrative, descriptive, procedure, discussion, explanation, exposition, report, and so on. They need long time to understand the meaning in the reading text because they didn’t know the characteristic of the text. As a result this change affects the comprehension process.
In English teaching, reading is one of the communication skills that need to be developed in the classroom. It needs to be developed because reading dominates all activities in English teaching, and writing usually  taught integrally with reading comprehension. In other words, reading must be involved during time of the teaching and learning activities in the classroom.
 In line with reading, River (1981 : 259) states that the most important activity in any language class is reading. It is not only as a source of information and pleasure activity but also as means of consolidating and extending one’s knowledge of language. It means that the activity of reading bings many benefits for students such as to get information, pleasure, and knowledge. Wood (1990 : 5) also states that reading will become a valuable source of information when it is learned to get meaning from different types of materials and to read for a variety of purpose. Thus, it can be concluded that reading is an important way of gaining knowledge and information in different types of materials and different purpose.
            By definitions, reading means to understand the meaning of written or printed. Anderson, et al., (1969 : 106 ) say that all reading activities to understand a text. Besides, Grellet ( 1981 : 3 ) states that reading is the process of understanding a reading text. It means that the students should comprehend the word, sentence, and paragraph to gain the meaning from text.
            The researcher has done a preliminary study through the interview with the students especially in fifth grade of SDN Tanjungrejo 4. In this interview almost all of the students in the fifth grade of SDN Tanjungrejo 4 have the same general problem in reading activity, including comprehending words, sentences, paragraphs, and text. Therefore, to check the students problem in reading interest, the researcher did the reading comprehension test September 13th  2011. The result of reading comprehension test follows by 35 students showed that many students still find difficulties in comprehending a reading  text, particularly in comprehending words, sentences, paragraphs, and a text. In addition. Most of students did not have ability in connecting ideas in a text consequently they tent to infer the reading text incorrectly. It can be seen from the result of the students’ reading comprehension test which showed that the students’ average score of reading comprehension test was 5,5 under from the KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal). Based on the observation checklist for students’ motivation in the preceding test, it shows that not all students’ involved in the teaching learning process
Elementary students  categorized as young learners in English, so their characteristic is like children. They like picture, games, song and telling story. In their process of learning, young learners needs the comfortable situation in the classroom. In order to make more understand with the lesson, they should fun in each lesson.
Based on, this argument the student like picture in the text. And for improve their understanding in reading text, I will try to use reading picture text. In this learning, I want to know the improving the students reading interest through reading picture text, and the end of study, the writer will get one formula in the problem of student when they study reading.
1.2   Statement of the Problem
The problem of the study is stated as follows,
1.     How can picture improve students reading interest at SDN  Tanjungrejo 4 ?
2.     How students get more than 70  are  80%  ?
3.     How can students more active and happy in the class ?
1.3  The Objectives of the Study
The success of the teaching learning process in the language classroom depends on the process of interaction between the teacher and the students. The degree of interaction in the classroom is influenced by certain factors such as the materials to be taught, the methods of teaching used and of the class that motivates the students to learn. Then, the objectives of the study are , To describe how  picture can  improve students reading interest at SDN Tanjungrejo 4
1.4  Significance of the Study
The purpose of the study is expected to be able to give benefits to the students, the teachers, and the school.
1.4.1 For Students
a)     The students reading ability increases
            b)     The students will not feel bored in the learning activity
            c)     The students vocabulary will increase automatically


1.4.2 For Teachers
      a)     The teachers will find a new approach which is appropriate for teaching reading
      b)     Teachers will develop their creativity to improve their teaching-learning process
      c )     The teachers will be able to guide teaching-learning process appropriately
1.4.3 For School
a)     Project work increases students’ achievement
       b)     Project work develops learning strategies which stimulate student’s
creativity.
1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study is about the improvement of study of students reading interest by using reading picture. There are reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills that can be improved by using reading picture. The researcher only focuses on reading skill in the observation to improve the students reading interest. The researcher describes the process and result of using reading picture, not to evaluate the process. Because of limited time and opportunity, the researcher limits study only to the teacher’s way developing the students’ reading interest. 
1.6 Definition of key term
In order to avoid misunderstanding of the terms used in the study the researcher gives the following definition:
a.        Improving              : Process which enhance students knowledge and enables them to acquire skills like collaboration, communication, and independent learning, making reading skills  better,  raising to a more desirable or more excellent quality or condition.
b.       Reading interest    : The high motivation from the students to know the meaning of the text and to answer the question correctly from the text.  This is shown by the students score
c.        Picture                   : small copy or model of something that was taken out from magazines, real object, flash cards, chart, etc used a teaching media to teach English.
