Chapter I
Introduction
This chapter discusses about (1) Background
of the Study, (2) Research Problem, (3) Object of the Study, (4) Scope and
Limitation of the Study, (5) Significance of the Study, (6) Definition of Key Terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
English
is very important in our life. Because English is an international language.
Most people in the world speak English in their communicative way. In this
case, the language learning method is very important to improve speaking
student ability. So, by a good language learning method expected can make the
students speak well.
Speaking
is very important to make students success in the future and also as measured
on their ability in communication in language. In other words, speaking as a
means of communication orally is highly needed and has to be taught in the
school as good as possible, Nunan (1991) in Eduard (2009:3).
In
reality, some teachers still use a traditional method and also some students
feel that learning English is very difficult. There are some factors for it.
One of factors is English as foreign language so make the students still confuse about
pronunciation. Then, the students also not interest on learning process because
most teacher use a traditional method.
Based
on the observation of the researcher at the first grade students of Junior high
school Pujon-Malang the students were difficult to speak English because two
reasons: (1) the students were lack of vocabulary so that they reluctance to
express their ideas, (2) the students can’t give respond what the teacher said
because they do not understand about the instruction. This is shown by mean
score. The mean of student’s mean score is 45 in average before the implementation of TPR
method. Whereas, the students’ score
should be 70 in average based on KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum) in the
school. Then, the researcher thought that other suitable methods for improving
speaking are needed at the first grade students of Junior high school
Pujon-Malang.
Based
on the background above, the researcher proposes a method that can be taken
consideration to improve speaking ability at Islamic Junior high school by
applying an interesting method that is TPR (Total Physical Response).
This method gives motivation to the
students in teaching and learning process exactly in the students’ speaking
class. Furthermore, the students will be easy to response when their friends
are performing their speaking in the class.
Therefore, the study is conduct to improve
students’ speaking at the first grade students of Junior high school
Pujon-Malang.
1.2 Research Problem
Based
on the research background above, the statement of the problem is formulated as
“How can Total Physical Response (TPR) method improve speaking students’
ability of the first grade students of Junior high school Pujon-Malang?”
1.3 Objective
of the Study
Based
on the research above, the purpose of the study is to describe how TPR can
improve students’ speaking ability of the first grade students of Islamic Junior
high school Pujon-Malang.
1.4 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The
scope of this study is applying TPR method for Junior High school to improve
students’ speaking ability. This research is to implement at the first grade
students of Junior high school Pujon-Malang.
In this
case, pronunciation will be applied in speaking ability because there are many
components in speaking but I just want to discuss in pronunciation.
1.5 Significance of the Study
Based
on the research problem and the purpose of the study can be useful practically
and it can be useful for teacher and students.
1. For
teacher, the result of this study is hoped to be useful as the additional
knowledge that can be applied in the process of teaching and learning English,
especially in improving speaking ability. In other words, teacher can be use
TPR method as alternative method in teaching and learning process.
2. For
students, the result of the study is expected to improve the students’ interest
and also have great motivation to speak and understand what the teacher wont.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
To
avoid some misunderstanding about this study, so I will give definition of the
key terms in this study are given as follow:
1. Improving
The students make better. It means they
can improve their vocabulary
to support in their speaking.
2. Speaking
Speaking is of language skill which needs
active involvement, the ability of
students to speak and to express their
ideas and to uses in their daily
communication.
3. Total Physical Response (TPR)
Total Physical Response (TPR) is language
teaching method built around the
coordination of speech and action, it
attempts to teach language through
physical (motor) activity (James Asher).
