Implementing Jigsaw to Improve the Ability of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 2 Panekan Kabupaten Magetan in Writing Narrative the Academic Year 2013/2014

Abstract

Based on the finding of the preliminary study held at SMPN 2 Panekan Kabupaten Magetan only 20.83% got score 75 or more than 75 in writing narrative test. The researcher proposed jigsaw to solve the problem. Jigsaw is strategy in which the learners are doing activity in home group and expert group. The objective of the study is to improve the students’ ability in writing narrative through jigsaw. This study was designed for collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher (acted as teacher) and the collaborator (acted as observer) worked together on the procedures of the study, namely: planning, implementing the plan, observing the action, and reflecting the result of the action. The subjects of the study were 24 students of the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Panekan Kabupaten Magetan. This research was done in two cycles. Each cycles consisted of two meetings in which teaching learning using jigsaw was done. And to add the students’ interest in writing and to make the learning and teaching more enjoyfull was applied a game. The game was Hercules Boom Game.Implementing jigsaw in teaching writing narrative had several procedures: (1) generating idea: activating students’ background knowledge, (2) drafting: focusing on the fluency of writing and not worries yet about grammar, punctuation,or spelling (3) revising:  making expert group and rewriting the paper, building upon what has already been done, in order to make it stronger, (4) editing: checking the paper for mistake in grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling, back into home group again, (5) publishing: informing the result of discussion to the other group with Hercules Boom Game.
