English has
increasingly become the medium of communication around the world both in local
and global contexts. The realization of importance of English highlights the
necessity of every country to have its people become better equipped with
English performance. English
is used in almost every part of lives; Brown (200, p. 118) states that English
is not frequently learned as a tool for understanding and teaching in US or
British culture values.
English
language teaching professionals has increased worldwide. The importance of English has
also sparked a growing interest in the teaching of English as a foreign
language (EFL). The
relation of the need in teaching and learning English is constantly improved.
One aspect of the improvements and the success of the teaching and learning
English are the instructional materials. Mandey (1988) states that good text
book gives great support to the success of English learning to prepare and
conduct teaching, teacher needs textbooks.
Textbooks are also important for
students who don’t have textbooks with them during the teaching and learning
process will not be able to follow the lesson well. Brown (200, p. 136),
questions the quality of classes without books, pictures, charts, and
technological aids. We could have speaking in the conversation class,
role-play, and discussion, and the most common materials support for language
instruction comes through textbooks.
As other schools, SMA 45
Purwodadi Pasuruan some positive aspects, the school has also some problems
which should be solved, especially with the English instructional materials,
the researcher will develop his teaching speaking materials of conversation
class. He felt that his class is not as good as before; it is because there are
many problems and should be solved. The first problem is the boredoms; the
students felt that the materials are not interesting anymore and some topics
are needed to be refreshed or renewed. And the second one is the materials are
not conducted structurally, in the instructional materials before, there is no chapter
of the materials, so the materials made the teacher confused to rearrange the
material before entering the class.
The third
one is the students needed new many vocabularies which are placed in the back
of each topics in the English instructional materials to make easy the students
and can practice speaking skill with new word. The fourth one is the students
needed the materials are divided to the students, so in their home they can
study by themselves, and prepare the lessons for the next materials well.
The fifth
is the material need guidance to pronounce or spell the vocabularies in that
material. The materials need to state the curriculum 2013 as the guide of the
study. By all the needs of the students, and the students’ problems which are
faced in the teaching speaking materials of English conversation club (ECC), so
the research will be conducted. The researcher wants to conduct his research by
using Research and Development which is aimed at developing and validating
educational products, like textbooks, syllabus, and instructional materials.
Statement of the problems
Statement of the problems of this study is to
develop speaking materials for grade X of the first semester on English
Conversation Club (ECC) in SMA 45 Purwodadi Pasuruan.in this sub title will
state the solving problems, the first is renewing some topic with the
scientific theme, the second one is giving some vocabularies with the spelling,
and the third one is the material is still used KTSP will be changed into
curriculum two thousand and thirteen which is used now.
Objective of the Study
This study wants to produce appropriate
instructional materials based on two thousand and thirteen (2013) curriculums
to develop speaking skill for grade X Students on English Club in SMA 45
Purwodadi Pasuruan, the materials are developed to facilitate and maximize the
teaching Speaking Skill on English Conversation Club (ECC), so that the
teaching and learning process will be more meaningful and effective and the
students will have more exposure on speaking skill.
Scope and Limitation of the Product
The product is limited for the
study developing speaking instructional materials for grade X of the first
semester on English Peaking Skill of English Conversation Club (ECC) in SMA 45
Purwodadi Pasuruan by using two thousand and thirteen (2013) curriculums. The
materials will be designed as fellow:
(1) the materials are written under the criteria linked to 2013 Content
Standard, (2) the materials relevant to the students level, that is tenth grade
students of Senior High School 45 Purwodadi Pasuruan, especially for the first
semester (3) the materials are organized in terms of language, e.g.: Chapter
I Present Tenses: “Daily routines, Possession, Something special”. Chapter II
Nominal sentence: “Describing pictures, Whose is it?, Family tree”. Chapter III
Present perfect and past perfect: “Accounting for moods, the right experience
for the job, true or false”. Chapter IV commands, requests, suggestions:
“Directions, Suggestions, Cooking recipes”.
Chapter V Future tense: “Finding time to meet, how will the story end,
the world tomorrow”.
Benefit of the Development
The benefit of this study is to develop
conversation instructional materials between students and teachers as well as
to some ones who are concerned with the teaching of speaking. The contributions
are: (a) as an alternative source of speaking materials which support the
syllabus and provide more exposure for the speaking class; (b) as one of the
learning source that enlarge the student’s knowledge, making feel easy and
interest in learning the language, especially speaking skill; (c) as one of the
teaching materials that can be used to facilitate and maximize the teaching of
speaking so that the learning process will get the needs; (d) the materials
give some vocabularies and how to pronounce the vocabularies.
